The Netherlands Embassy in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), in close collaborations with VEI, hosted its 1st 'River Clean Up' event on Saturday, September 25th. 3,700 kilo garbage was collected by 120 participants, including the Private Sector operating along the river, various NGOs, Addis Ababa Water and Sewerage Authority, the Solid Waste Management Agency, the Ministry of Water, and community members working along the river. Along with the expected paper and plastic trash, participants retrieved tires, various fake human hairs, discarded carpets, shoes and other organic and non-organic waste.
The volunteers who recovered the waste handed them to the local administration’s cleaners for disposal. The volunteers cleaned the river and its banks from about 8:30 am to 11:00 am. These dedicated group of volunteers included many individuals, friends, and families as well as groups from Rotary Club and Rotaract International. This shows the commitment the volunteers are making to keep the River healthy by ensuring they have reserved time to participate in the event.
The River Clean Up is one component of VEI’s IWRM4WASH Project, Trans Regional Dialogue, River Trash Free Initiative. Members of the Trans Regional Dialogue will clean water crossings on a regular basis throughout the year. In addition, the project focus on preserving the water quality through River Cleaning initiatives.
